i don't normally buy spill vases, but i couldn't resist this one. done in an earth toned palate with accents of the most beautiful shade of blue, that makes everything pop. Several animals, a horse, cow and a pair of doves. The reverse is white and the entire vase is stippled, early out of the mold.

A colorful Staffordshire figure of an equestrian on his horse. Not much of an equestrian i think because his heels are not down, but the horse is beautiful, done in a lovely shade of blue. The figure has his helmet, boots pants and riding coat, and the figure stands 8" tall. I think at one time the figure originally had reins and the rider held a crop, neither loss is important because a true equestrian does everything with his legs. The word equestrian is printed at the base.

This is a large toby sometimes called The Gin Lady, or Martha Gunn. 19th century and standing 9" it is about 7" wide. Done in shades of green and yellow and ochre she has her yellow money purse on her right side. Her hands are folded and she looks as if she is laughing, enjoying a good bawdy joke.. Her yellow apron is dotted and is over a pink skirt. On her head is a white bonnet with a blue bow tied in front. The handle is deep yellow, and there are no losses to the paint or chips. Martha Gunn was a historical figure and is famous for bathing royal personages in the sea at Brighton. There is an English rhyme that goes To Brighton came he, Came George III's son To be bathed in the sea By famed Martha Gunn. Many members of the nobility and other well known personages of that period were bathed in the sea by this esteemed character. Martha Gunn died on the 2nd of May 1815, at the age of 88, and her grave can be visited today at St. Nicholas Churchyard. Her appearance has been permanently captured by the potters of the day and is a treat for toby jug collectors.
